THE DAY THE YORKSHIRE AID CONVOY ROLLED OUT OF LSS

A convoy of lorries filled with much-needed basic essentials donated by a host of Yorkshire businesses and individual donors set off from the headquarters of LSS Waste Management in Cross Green, Leeds at the end of May; its destination, Romania.

The Yorkshire Aid Convoy, which was set-up by Mark Murphy of Leeds-based Wetheralds Painters & Building Services Ltd in 2002, makes annual trips to either Romania or the Ukraine and this year carried over 50 tonnes of donated goods, worth over £2.5million, over 1,500-miles to various schools, hospitals, care homes, disabled centres and business start-up projects in the Sfintu Gheorghe and Sighisoara regions of Transylvania (Romania).

Amongst the goods transported were 50 pallets of clothes donated by the Great North Run, which included T shirts, towels, tracksuits and trainers.

Mark Murphy of the Yorkshire Aid Convoy said:
“It’s a massive annual undertaking to get the convoy up, running and on the road, and it couldn’t be done without the hard work and commitment of all the volunteers who help us through the year, as well on the trip itself. It is though worth every second of the work being put in when you see the reception the donations receive when we deliver them.”

This year’s sponsors included LSS Waste Management, which supplied two of the four trucks and covered fuel costs.

Nigel Woolford, LSS Waste’s managing director, said:
“Initially it was difficult to source the vehicles to meet the project requirements, but we were happy to put the work in for such a great cause.”

The story generated a lot of great coverage for the Yorkshire Aid Convoy, including this piece on Made in Yorkshire TV: https://www.madeinleeds.tv/video/?video=x6kb912
